His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in particular - resulted in him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with long-term trainer his previous coach.
Presently training with Johansson and his other coach, he has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set victory over opponent Moutet.
This represents his first title since the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt after spring of 2023.

The tennis star, the past champion, had lost his past six championship matches, featuring in Halle previously this season.
His defensive play style and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had caused commentators to question if his skill to play at the top level was finished.
However the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and play aggressively, backed up by an improved serve.
Medvedev came back from a break down in the first set against the difficult opponent, securing four of the concluding five games to gain the advantage.

He rescued 4 initial opportunities in a close final set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to secure the win.
Fittingly, the winner clinched victory with a shot at the front of the court, with the Frenchman failing to control a return after a lengthy match.
