As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
