The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain calls made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
